Top 10 English TV shows of 2016

1. Game of Thrones: HBO's hugely popular show 'Game of Thrones', has demonstrated unparalleled and enduring popularity over the last 5 years now. With season 7 to kick start from 2017, we hardly can wait. The show became the most popular one of all time with 170 countries showing it, whilst it also became the most downloaded show ever. 2. Stranger Things: Netflix's original series 'Stranger Things' debuted in July and launched with a bang. The show stars award-winning actress Winona Ryder as Joyce Byers, who lives in a small Indiana town in 1983 - inspired by a time when tales of science fiction captivated audiences. When Joyce's 12-year-old son, Will, goes missing, she launches a terrifying investigation into his disappearance with local authorities. As they search for answers, they unravel a series of extraordinary mysteries involving secret government experiments, unnerving supernatural forces, and a very unusual little girl. The show's impeccable casting made it to our top 10 list of shows this year.

4. Westworld: A small-screen remake of Michael Crichton's 1973 film about a Wild West-themed amusement park populated by robots has been under development at HBO for years. It took the creative minds of Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy and ofcourse the CGI technology to make it a reality. More importantly for HBO executives, the $100 million series is a hit. The season finale drew a series-high 2.2 million live viewers. Overall, Westworld averaged around 12 million weekly viewers when factoring in Live + 7 numbers, making it the network's most-watched first season ever for an original scripted series. The show managed to leave an impact just like 'Game of Thrones'.

5. American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson: The show is an anthology series centered around some of history's most famous criminals, including O.J Simpson. This FX's series finished as cables' most-watched new series of 2016 and as the network's top-rated first year series ever. Inspired by Jeffrey Toobin's book "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson," the series included deep-dive details of the trial and the unprecedented media circus it created. It deftly handled the racial undertones of the case and strangely reflected some of the divides still present today. The shoe has been nominated for four Golden Globes.

6. Narcos: Netflix's hit show 'Narcos' became an addictive one. The story of a drug baron Pablo Escobar proved to be astonishingly popular. It’s all about the danger of one man’s massive ego and importance, about a megalomaniac, a larger-than-life character who rises to prominence and wants to be the president of the country and will do anything to obtain that, about how the people are duped into believing that he has their best interests at heart, about how his populist politics are not welcome in the higher echelons of those in parliament. It’s a story that’s so frighteningly real. We live in the DEA’s worlds for a bit and then Escobar’s. Brazilian Moura makes a cold and ruthless Escobar.

7. Orange Is The New Black: When 'OITNB' debuted on Netflix, everyone went crazy. A brilliant comedy drama based on the true story of Piper Kerman, who was convicted for felony money-laundering. She wrote her memoir 'Orange Is The New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison' explaining what all she went through when locked up inside. The show received four Emmy awards and was nominated for 16. It is still one of the most favourite shows ever.

8. Veep: After the end of its fifth season, HBO's show 'Veep' turned out to be more prophetic that any major news source. A political satire 'Veep' won its first Outstanding Comedy Series Emmy without creating any distinguishable drop-off. The series revolved around Former Senator Selina Meyer who gets an opportunity to serve as the Vice President of the United States. She tries to prevent various political uproars and juggles her public as well as private life.

9. Better Call Saul: The beauty of what Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have built with their “Breaking Bad” prequel can be found entirely in its details, which bring a richness to the world and characters we’ve gotten to know so intimately over the first two seasons. In Season 2, “Saul” found a new depth to the drama, making the seemingly mundane as exciting and terrifying as the most high-stakes action-adventure. Though we know where Jimmy McGill's journey ends, but the show got us hooked upon.

10. Mr. Robot: In its second season, Sam Esmail’s hacker drama took some big swings and succeeded in bringing some of the most challenging and daring filmmaking of 2016 to the small screen. From staggering shocks to a descent into multi-camera madness co-starring Alf, there were moments of “Mr. Robot” we confess we saw coming. The second half of the season contained some thrilling formal experimentation and undeniable moments of suspense, connection and loss.
