CJ Werleman

In a now deleted tweet, he made this claim sharing a post from news website The Wire. The tweet viral before he took it off. Here’s the screengrab of his tweet
Several other social media users picked up his tweet and made the same claim.
TRUTHThe name of the victim in the incident in question is
Sarat Moran
. He was a Hindu and his age was 34 years.
VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYUsing relevant keywords, we found a Times of India report dated June 14, 2021 that identified the victim as Sarat Moran.
As per the report, Moran was a tribal and was lynched by a mob on suspicion of being a cattle thief near Doomdooma in Assam’s Tinsukia district, leading to the detention of 12 people on Sunday.
Digging further, we found a series of tweets from Special DGP Assam Police, GP Singh, in which he pointed to Werleman that he was factually incorrect.
Singh mentioned that Moran was a Hindu and those who lynched him were also Hindus.
Further, The Wire’s
post that Werleman and others shared to make their claim has no mention of victim being a Muslim. The report had no factual inaccuracies.
