Samsung launched its first smartwatch with a rectangular display called Galaxy Gear in 2013. This design persisted through subsequent releases such as the Galaxy Gear 2 and the Galaxy Gear Live. However, Samsung eventually transitioned to a round dial for its Galaxy smartwatches.

According to a recent online report, Samsung is considering a return to rectangular displays for its upcoming Galaxy smartwatch models.

According to a report by Sammobile, Samsung is planning to bring back the rectangular display to its smartwatches. As per the report, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Watch 7 series may sport this big design change.

The rationale behind Samsung's shift to a square design remains ambiguous. While Wear OS technically accommodates square displays, the majority of apps, including Samsung's own One UI skin, are tailored for circular layouts. It appears plausible that Samsung aims to vie with the Apple Watch in this decision.

Samsung is expected to unveil the Samsung Galaxy 7 series smartwatch in July along with the Galaxy ring.
