How to use ChatGPT's group chat feature
OpenAI rolled out group chats in ChatGPT globally this week, allowing up to 20 people to collaborate with the AI chatbot in a single conversation. The feature launched to all logged-in users on Free, Go, Plus and Pro plans after a brief testing period in select countries. Whether you're planning a trip with friends or working on a project with coworkers, here's how to get started.
ChatGPT follows the flow of conversation and decides when to respond based on context. You can mention "ChatGPT" directly in a message if you want the bot to jump in, and it can even react with emojis or reference profile photos when creating personalized images.
Group chats stay separate from your personal conversations, and ChatGPT won't use your individual memory or custom instructions. However, you can set group-specific custom instructions to adjust ChatGPT's tone or personality for that particular chat.
To manage your group, tap the chat name at the top of the screen. From there, you can rename the chat, add or remove people, mute notifications or leave the group entirely. Rate limits only apply when ChatGPT sends a message, not when humans chat with each other.
Setting up your first group chat
- Open ChatGPT and tap the "people" icon in the top-right corner of any new or existing chat
- Select "Start group chat" to create a new conversation
- Set up your profile with a name, username and photo when prompted (first-time users only)
- Share the invite link with friends, family or colleagues—anyone in the group can share it to bring others in
