Apple Maps is a navigation app that is available exclusively for users who own Apple devices like iPhones, iPads and Macs. Unlike its rival, Google Maps, Apple’s real-time navigation platform doesn’t allow its users a way to input self-selected routes. The navigation app limits its users to the pre-selected routes it offers. However, the Cupertino-based tech giant is expected to remove this limitation soon.
According to a report by MacRumors, codes discovered within Apple Maps show that the company might be planning to add support for "custom routes" in the app with iOS 18. The report claims that the file didn’t reveal many details except the “CustomRouteCreation” name of the feature. However, it notes that the upcoming feature will be limited to the United States at launch.
Apple Maps custom route feature: What is it
Custom routes will allow Apple Maps users to set the specific roads they want to travel down. Users can personalise their routes either for scenic purposes or for the familiarity of a route.
For several years, Apple Maps users have requested the company to offer a feature that will allow them to choose route options beyond the default. Other services like Google Maps already allow users to create custom routes on a computer and then view them on an iOS device.
Apple is expected to introduce the new Apple Maps feature along with the iOS 18 software update at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024 event. The event will be held between June 10 and June 14. Developers and students will be allowed to attend the event in person on the first day. WWDC 2024 will also be live-streamed on multiple platforms including YouTube and more.
