NEW DELHI: Former finalist Marketa Vondrousova advanced to the last 16 of the
French Open with a decisive 6-1, 6-3 victory over France's Chloe Paquet.
Vondrousova, who made history as the first unseeded player to win Wimbledon last year, was a finalist at Roland Garros in 2019. With this win, she keeps her hopes alive for another run to the final.
Vondrousova, the fifth seed, started the match with a strong performance, breaking Paquet's serve to love in the opening game. Although Paquet responded with a break of her own, Vondrousova dominated the rest of the first set, winning five consecutive games to secure it 6-1.
In the second set, Vondrousova quickly established a 3-0 lead. Paquet, playing in her first third-round match at Roland Garros, managed to break back and close the gap to 4-3.
However, Vondrousova broke Paquet's serve again and then held her own serve to seal the match, despite Paquet's efforts to force a break point.
Next, the 24-year-old Czech will face Serbian qualifier Olga Danilovic, who has already caused an upset by defeating 11th seed Danielle Collins.
