At the time of Djokovic's announcement, Sinner was engaged in his quarter-final match against Grigor Dimitrov.

The news of Djokovic's withdrawal confirmed that Sinner would ascend to the top spot in the ATP rankings next week, regardless of his performance in the remainder of the tournament.

Prior to this unexpected development, Sinner was aware that reaching the final at Roland Garros would be sufficient to secure the number one position.

However, his milestone achievement arrived sooner than anticipated.

At just 22 years old, Sinner has had a remarkable season, clinching titles at the Rotterdam and Miami Opens, as well as claiming his first Grand Slam victory at the Australian Open in Melbourne.
