French Open 2024: Defending champion Iga Swiatek saves match point to down Naomi Osaka in Roland Garros thriller

NEW DELHI: Defending champion Iga Swiatek staged a remarkable comeback to defeat Naomi Osaka, narrowly avoiding what would have been her earliest exit from the tournament in an awe-inspiring French Open second-round match.
The match, which took place on Philippe Chatrier court, was a highlight for fans, especially given the limited action due to rain affecting the outside courts. Despite the inclement weather leading many spectators to leave early, those who stayed were treated to an intense contest between two four-time Grand Slam champions.
Swiatek, who had previously won the French Open in 2020 and 2022, and added another title in 2023, managed to save a match point before ultimately securing a 7-6(1), 1-6, 7-5 victory.
The match was notably competitive for a second-round encounter, with Swiatek acknowledging the high level of play from Osaka and expressing her intention to be better prepared in the future.
"This match was really intense, much more than I would have expected for a second round. I'll be more ready next time. Naomi played some amazing tennis with a loose hand," said Swiatek after the win.

Osaka, returning to the French Open for the first time since 2022 after a maternity break, displayed impressive form, particularly in the second set where she dominated Swiatek with a series of powerful winners.
However, the momentum shifted in the deciding set. Osaka, leading 5-2, was unable to maintain her advantage, making several unforced errors that allowed Swiatek to win five consecutive games and clinch the match. This victory extended Swiatek's winning streak to 14 matches, following her recent successes in Madrid and Rome.

Swiatek also addressed the French Open audience, known for their passionate yet sometimes disruptive behaviour, urging them to support players respectfully and not to distract them during rallies.
"Basically for you, because it's entertainment and we make a lot of money thanks to you, sometimes when we are under a lot of pressure you scream during the rallies and it's hard to stay focused," the Polish tennis star added.
The behaviour of the Roland Garros crowd was also a topic of discussion following an incident involving Belgian player David Goffin, who criticized some fans for their lack of respect. Tournament organizers responded by emphasizing the importance of spectators showing respect to all players.
On the same day, only nine matches were completed due to adverse weather conditions. Among those progressing to the third round were Carlos Alcaraz, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Coco Gauff, and Jannik Sinner, the latter of whom defeated French veteran Richard Gasquet in straight sets.
