NEW DELHI: Dominic Thiem, a two-time finalist at Roland Garros, suffered a disappointing defeat in the second round of qualifying on Wednesday. The Austrian player lost 6-2, 7-5 to Otto Virtanen of Finland.

Since reaching the final in 2020, Thiem has struggled to advance beyond the first round of the main draw. His rankings have plummeted from World No.3 to 131 due to persistent wrist issues.

Thiem's career highlight came in 2020 when he triumphed over Alexander Zverev in the US Open final, which was impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic. However, since that crowning achievement, his career has been on a downward trajectory.

The 30-year-old has already declared his intention to retire from professional tennis at the conclusion of the 2024 season. Meanwhile, the main draw of the French Open is set to commence on Sunday.
