MUMBAI: Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday told the state assembly that he has written to the Union Sports Minister, seeking justice for wrestler Narsingh Yadav, who has been virtually ruled out of the upcoming Rio Olympics after a doping scandal.

"I have written to the Union Sports Minister. I have said justice should be done to players like Narsingh Yadav," he said in the Lower House.

Raising suspicion over the manner in which the entire doping scandal played out, Fadnavis said, "Due to such episodes, genuine players like Narsingh Yadav are bearing the brunt."

"Justice should be done to him," he said.

The Chief Minister was responding to Leader of Opposition Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil, who raised the issue in the assembly. "Yadav is from Maharashtra, and it is our duty to support talented players like him," Patil said.

26-year-old Narsingh had tested positive for banned anabolic steroid methandienone which has put his participation in the

Rio Games

under jeopardy. The grappler was selected to represent India in the 74kg category.

The sportsman has alleged that he was framed by rivals, who spiked his food and supplements.

Mumbai Congress on Monday claimed that Yadav has been "framed" and there was a conspiracy behind the doping scandal.

"He is innocent, it is a conspiracy," Mumbai Congress president Sanjay Nirupam had said, reacting to the doping scandal. "Yadav is a victim of wrestling politics in north India. He has been framed. He is innocent. I know him for several years. He drinks milk, curd and lassi. He doesn't have any vices," the former Member of Parliament said.

The

Wrestling Federation of India

should verify the facts from National Anti-Doping Agency as it is a question of India's self-respect, the Congress leader had said.

Yadav was born and brought up in Maharashtra. But he is a product of the Sports Authority of India. Maharashtra was once upon a time a premier state for wrestling. But in the past 25 years nobody from Maharashtra has made it big in this sport. This is due to the dwindling number of akhadas and talims where young boys from the peasantry came to train as wrestlers. A few sugar mills took upon patronizing wrestling after the princely state of Kolhapur ceded to the Indian Union after independence. Thereafter despite political heavy weights like Sharad Pawar heading the Maharashtra state Wrestling Body the state was unable to maintain its dominance in the country as most of the wrestlers preferred to attain glory in the traditional mud wrestling and were reluctant to train and compete on the mat or plainly speaking the Olympic Freestyle and Greco Roman Style. Right now Maharashtra is lagging behind due to the lack of vision of the administrators. The state on its part has failed to promote the sport in a big way in comparison to Haryana which is a small state resources wise. Prima-facie it appears that injustice has been done to Yadav as some sabotage has taken place to deprive him from participating in the Olympics. He had to face a challenge in court, from Sushil Kumar and the matter was laid to rest after the courts ruled in favour of Yadav. At that time none from Maharashtra, the government or the state body came out to back this poor son of a milkman or ''bhaiyya'' from UP. Probably it was his upper Indian background failed to earn him support. Now that the matter has taken an ugly turn and is making haedlines the politicians have jumped to score a few brownie points. There is no hope for Narsingh Yadav now and the ''crocodile taers'' being shed by the Leader of Opposition and the Chief Minister of Maharashtra have come too late! When will these worthies realize this? What about the Sports Minister of Maharashtra? Has he spoken a single word during the controversy? Poor Narsingh is an outsider in the Jat or Haryana dominated Indian wrestling scene! That''s sure!
