NEW DELHI: Aruna Tanwar of India lost badly to Nurcihan Ekinci of Turkey on Thursday in the women's K 44-47kg round of 16 at the Paris Paralympics. Her score was 0-19.
In the five-minute round, Aruna was completely outmatched by her Turkish opponent, who scored points whenever she pleased. During the game, Ekinci recorded nine body kick points while the Indian gave up one penalty point (gam-jeom), as per PTI.
Athletes in the K44 category have impairments to one arm above the elbow.
In 2021, para taekwondo made its debut at the Tokyo Paralympics. For each gender, athletes will participate in five different weight divisions.
Matches in para taekwondo are one-round competitions that can go up to five minutes.
Kicks to the head and fists are prohibited in the able-bodied Olympic Games because different competitors have different blocking techniques.
Athletes put on safety gear and "sensor socks," which detect whether an opponent's torso is struck and if a point is awarded.
A standard kick earns an athlete two points; a turning kick earns three points; and a spinning kick earns four points.
Head kicks, grabs, pushing, kicks below the belt, and stepping out of bounds are examples of fouls that result in gam-jeoms, which are penalties that award the opposition a point.
