NEW DELHI: American Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone shattered her own world record in the 400 metres hurdles, clocking an astonishing time of 50.37 seconds to secure her second consecutive Olympic gold medal on Thursday.

Fellow American Anna Cockrell claimed the silver medal with a time of 51.87, while Femke Bol of the Netherlands, who was considered a strong contender for gold, settled for bronze after fading in the final 50 metres, finishing in 52.15 seconds.

McLaughlin-Levrone's incredible performance marked the sixth occasion on which she had broken the world record, surpassing her previous best of 50.65 seconds set at the U.S. trials in June.

The enthusiastic crowd at the Stade de France erupted in celebration when it became evident that a new world record was within her grasp. In a fitting gesture, McLaughlin-Levrone rang the victory bell, adorned with a sparkling tiara on her head.

As the first woman to break both the 52 and 51-second barriers in the event, McLaughlin-Levrone has been on a relentless pursuit to rewrite the record books whenever she competes. Her exceptional performances have elevated the 400 hurdles to a prestigious event and solidified her status as a superstar in the world of athletics.

"It’s amazing to see our sport continue to grow, for people to want to watch the 400m hurdles, it’s amazing. Just a lot of hard work put in this year," she told reporters.

"I knew it was going to be a tough race. An amazing competition all the way round."
