Commonwealth Games silver medallist Bindyarani Devi clinched the silver medal in the women’s 55kg category at the Asian Weightlifting Championships in Jinju on Saturday. But she was not able to celebrate her win until today since she was unable to speak to her family in Manipur. Reason? The mobile internet services being suspended in Manipur due to the ongoing violence in the state and her being unable to make an international call. The weightlifter was finally able to contact her family today.

“I spoke to them today, finally. I had not spoken to my family members since Thursday (two days before the competition) till now. I spoke to my family members before that, and my mother gave me her blessings but uske baad baat nahi hui. Rona bhi aaya. Medal ki khushi par koi celebration nahi ho payi thi. But I spoke to them today. I told them about the medal and my mother told me that they are fine and I shouldn’t worry about them,” shared Bindyarani.

Bindyarani also pointed out that this was the first time she could not speak to her mother before a competition. “Yeh kaafi zyada difficult tha iss baar, mere paas meri mummy papa ki photo hai, usko maine pray kiya ki achha karke aaungi. I am praying for the situation to get normal in Manipur. I hope things get better soon,” added Bindyarani.

After clinching silver in Jinju, Bindyarani will now focus on Asian Games. “I will give my best for the Asian Games now,” she shared.
