Team Canada Rallies From 2-0 Deficit to Defeat Finland 3-2, Reaches Olympic Gold Medal Game

Team Canada completed a dramatic comeback to defeat defending Olympic champion Finland 3-2 in Friday's semifinal at Milano Cortina 2026. Nathan MacKinnon's power-play goal with 35.2 seconds remaining sent Canada to Sunday's gold medal game at Santagiulia Arena.

The victory represents Canada's opportunity to capture its first Olympic gold with NHL players since 2014 in Sochi. Finland entered as the reigning champion after winning gold in Beijing 2022 when the NHL did not participate in the tournament.

Finland dominated early, but Team Canada pushes for the win

Finland executed its defensive game plan to perfection through two periods while building a 2-0 advantage. Mikko Rantanen opened the scoring on the power play after Sam Bennett took a goalie interference penalty. The Dallas Stars forward beat Jordan Binnington over the glove on a clean faceoff win.

Erik Haula extended Finland's lead with a shorthanded goal just 22 seconds into a penalty kill. The Colorado Avalanche forward raced to a loose puck and lifted a backhander over Binnington's shoulder to silence Canadian supporters.

Juuse Saros stood tall in Finland's net through the opening periods. The Nashville Predators goaltender made crucial saves on Macklin Celebrini and Mitch Marner while his teammates limited Canada's offensive chances.

Sam Reinhart sparked Canada's comeback with a power-play goal at 14:20 of the second period. The Florida Panthers forward deflected a Cale Makar shot past Saros to cut Finland's lead in half and shift momentum. From then on, it was the tournament favorites to take their place in the finals.

It was Shea Theodore who tied the game with 8:42 remaining in regulation after Canada increased its offensive pressure. The Vegas Golden Knights defenseman blasted a shot past Saros following strong forechecking from Tom Wilson to even the score at 2-2.

MacKinnon delivered the decisive blow after absorbing a high stick from Niko Mikkola. The Colorado Avalanche center scored on the ensuing power play to complete Canada's rally. Finland challenged for offside, but the goal survived video review.

Canada advances to face either the United States or Slovakia in Sunday's gold medal game at 8:10 a.m. ET at Santagiulia Arena. The winner captures Olympic gold, while the loser settles for silver in the medal ceremony.

Connor McDavid broke the Olympic scoring record during the semifinal victory while wearing the captain's armband in Sidney Crosby's absence. Canada's comeback marks another dramatic finish in a tournament filled with overtime games and late heroics throughout the knockout rounds.
