NHL analyst dismisses Vancouver Canucks' playoff hopes after turbulent regular season
The Vancouver Canucks' postseason aspirations are hanging by a thread, and NHL analyst Martin Biron isn't holding back on his assessment. With a tough loss to the Dallas Stars and key players either injured or underperforming, the Canucks are facing an uphill battle. Biron has gone as far as to say the team is "toast" in the playoff race, pointing to a combination of defensive struggles, inconsistent performances, and the absence of Thatcher Demko as major roadblocks. But is there still a glimmer of hope for Vancouver?
The Canucks entered their matchup against the Dallas Stars with momentum on their side, aiming for a three-game winning streak. However, that hope was quickly dashed as the Stars delivered a commanding 4-1 defeat, exposing Vancouver’s weaknesses in the process.
Biron, speaking on TSN’s That’s Hockey, emphasized that the Canucks' issues start in net. “I don't think they get in, right? And look, I may even say they’re toast right now. And they had a chance to get a three-game winning streak, and they let that slip against a really good team, the Dallas Stars. But I look at the way that Canucks are playing. Number one, if Thatcher Demko was there, maybe I change my story. And Kevin Lankinen's been really good," Biron stated. (via: Sportskeeda)
Defensively, the Canucks haven't fared much better. Although Quinn Hughes has been a bright spot, his occasional absences have left Vancouver exposed in critical moments. "But when you put a name like Demko against the top goalies, right, in the Western Conference, the ones that he's competing with, he's not there. That makes a difference. Defensively, you know, Quinn Hughes has been there, but he's missed a few games. And if you don't have a fully healthy Quinn Hughes, well, I think it puts the Canucks in a tough spot."
Biron added, underscoring how crucial the star defenseman is to the team’s success.

As the regular season winds down, Vancouver finds itself in an intense battle for a wild-card spot. However, Biron believes other Western Conference teams such as the Calgary Flames, St. Louis Blues, and Utah Hockey Club are in a stronger position to clinch playoff berths. Given their current trajectory, even if the Canucks manage to sneak into the postseason, a deep run seems unlikely.
Their latest loss to Dallas only deepens concerns. After a tight first two periods, the Stars took control in the third, with Jason Robertson and Mikko Rantanen sealing the win. The defeat leaves the Canucks trailing in the standings, adding further pressure as they prepare to face the Montreal Canadiens next.
With Demko’s health uncertain and a lack of defensive consistency, Vancouver's postseason future remains in serious jeopardy. If they want to prove analysts like Biron wrong, the Canucks must find a way to regroup and fast.
