NEW DELHI: The Washington Commanders are facing uncertainty at the quarterback position as Jacoby Brissett is listed as questionable for Sunday's matchup against the San Francisco 49ers due to a hamstring injury. Brissett reported tightness in his hamstring after Thursday's practice, prompting concerns about his availability for the upcoming game.
The quarterback situation took an unexpected turn when Brissett, who replaced Sam Howell as the starter, experienced hamstring issues just one day after the announcement. Brissett underwent treatment on both Thursday and Friday, leading to his inclusion on the injury report. If Brissett is unable to play on Sunday, Sam Howell will reassume the QB1 role.
Brissett stepped in for Howell in the last two games, both road losses to the Los Angeles Rams and New York Jets, extending Washington's losing streak to six games. Head Coach Ron Rivera expressed confidence in Brissett's capabilities, describing him as a "very, very viable player in this league."
Sam Howell, the 2022 fifth-round pick, has started 16 consecutive games for the Commanders, including the 2022 season finale. Despite ranking 11th in the NFL this season in passing yards with 3,624, Howell has faced challenges, throwing 19 touchdown passes along with a league-high 17 interceptions, including four pick-sixes. Additionally, he has endured a league-high 60 sacks.
With a 4-11 record, the Commanders are set to conclude the season with home games against the San Francisco 49ers (11-4) on Sunday and the Dallas Cowboys (10-5) on January 7. The outcome of Sunday's game against the 49ers remains uncertain, and Brissett's availability will significantly impact Washington's offensive strategy.
Brissett, who started 11 games for Cleveland last season, has showcased efficiency in limited appearances this season, completing 18 of 23 passes for 224 yards with three touchdowns and no interceptions.
