Patrick Mahomes is known for his "clutch" gene, the uncanny ability to make the impossible happen when the clock is ticking. But long before he was hoisting Lombardi trophies in Kansas City, Mahomes was facing a different kind of pressure in the hallways of Whitehouse High School in Texas. He was a sophomore with a massive crush, a junior "best friend" named Brittany Matthews, and a serious problem, he was stuck firmly in the friend zone.
Patrick Mahomes and Brittany Matthews’ love story started with rejection and a bold Valentine’s Day move
For Patrick, the journey to winning Brittany’s heart wasn’t a sprint, it was a grueling marathon.
"It took a long time," Mahomes admitted in the Netflix documentary "Quarterback.
"There were a couple of times when I tried to get out of the friend zone, and it didn’t work." To the outside world, they were the perfect pair of athletes, the star pitcher and the soccer standout but to Brittany, Patrick was simply the younger, goofy friend who walked her to class.
The turning point came on Valentine’s Day in 2012, and it wasn't exactly a grand, cinematic gesture. Prompted by his mother, Randi, to finally make a move, a nervous Patrick bought a single rose and a card. In the middle of a crowded school cafeteria, he handed them to Brittany. To shield his ego from potential rejection, he framed it as a "joke."
"I brought it to her as a joke, but I was also like, 'I actually like you,'" Patrick recalled with a laugh. The "joke" backfired in the best way possible. The lunch table erupted in cheers, and for the first time, Brittany saw the boy she had known for years in a different light. She found the gesture "the cutest thing in the world," and the spark was finally lit.
Their story didn't get easier after high school. They faced the ultimate test of young love, long distance. Brittany headed to UT Tyler to play soccer, while Patrick went to Texas Tech to cement his legacy on the football field. Through the miles, the draft, and the eventual move to Missouri, the foundation they built as best friends in those Texas hallways remained unshakable.
Today, with three children and a marriage that serves as the bedrock of the "Mahomes Kingdom," the couple looks back on those "friend zone" days with fondness. It serves as a reminder that the best victories, much like a Super Bowl comeback often require patience, a little bit of vulnerability, and the courage to take one last shot when it matters most.
