The Pittsburgh Steelers brought back Gerald Alexander for the 2025 season as defensive backs coach. He was part of the Pittsburgh staff as an assistant defensive backs coach from 2022 to 2023 and spent last season with the Las Vegas Raiders.
The Coaching Journey for Alexander
Gerald Alexander has had a very gradual rise, moving up the coaching ladder in both college and professional football. After his NFL playing days were finished, Alexander moved smoothly into coaching, being at Arkansas State, Washington, Indiana State, Montana State, and California before finding his way into the NFL. From 2020-2021, he was the defensive backs coach for the Miami Dolphins under head coach Brian Flores.
In 2022, he became an assistant defensive backs coach with the Steelers, helping the secondary tie for first in the NFL with 20 interceptions. Under him, Minkah Fitzpatrick set a personal best with six interceptions and gained Pro Bowl and First Team All-Pro honors.
When Alexander returns, there is some doubt as to what happens with Grady Brown, the current secondary coach of the Steelers. Brown was with the Steelers starting in 2021 and recently interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons’ defensive coordinator position but was not selected for it. It remains unclear how Alexander's return will affect his future with the team.
Gerald Alexander’s return to Pittsburgh signals the Steelers’ commitment to strengthening their defensive coaching staff. His familiarity with the team, proven ability to develop talent, and experience coaching at multiple levels make him a valuable addition. As the Steelers continue to refine their coaching roster, Alexander's expertise will undoubtedly contribute to their success on defense.
