The Pittsburgh Steelers find themselves at a crossroads in their search for a franchise quarterback, and if reports are to be believed, they are considering every possible option. One name that has emerged in trade rumors is Jacksonville Jaguars' former No. 1 overall pick, Trevor Lawrence. According to Ryan Burr of the Big Ten Network, the Steelers have inquired about a potential trade for the young quarterback, signaling their intent to make a serious push for a long-term solution under center.
"Steelers have made inquiries to the Jaguars about a trade for QB Trevor Lawrence. This directly from the horse's mouth in the Jags organization," Burr reported. "Steelers would deal this year's #1 and #2, but with the draft in Pittsburgh next year I would be very surprised if next year's #1 is even on the table."
Pittsburgh Steelers Exploring Trade for Trevor Lawrence: A Bold Move or Wishful Thinking?
Burr later clarified that the trade proposal he mentioned was merely his own suggestion rather than an official Steelers offer. However, the fact that Pittsburgh is even making inquiries shows that they are exploring every avenue to solidify their quarterback position.
While Lawrence has not quite lived up to the immense expectations he carried out of college, it is important to acknowledge that his struggles have not been entirely his fault. Jacksonville has been a historically dysfunctional franchise, often failing to provide adequate support for its quarterbacks. Despite these challenges, Lawrence has flashed potential, showcasing his strong arm, mobility, and leadership skills.
His stats over four seasons—13,815 passing yards, 69 touchdowns, and 46 interceptions—paint a picture of a quarterback who has yet to make the leap to elite status. His rookie season was particularly tough, as he led the league with 17 interceptions. Though his performance has improved since then, there are still lingering doubts about whether he can take that next step.
The biggest hurdle in any potential trade is Lawrence’s contract. In 2024, he signed a massive five-year, $275 million extension that ties him to Jacksonville through 2030. While his 2025 cap hit sits at a manageable $17 million, that number balloons to $78.5 million by 2029. The Jaguars do have a potential out in 2028 with no dead cap, which could make a trade more realistic in the future.
What Would It Take for Pittsburgh to Acquire Lawrence?
If the Steelers are genuinely serious about acquiring Lawrence, they would likely need to part with at least a first-round pick, if not more. However, Jacksonville’s willingness to even entertain such discussions remains a major question. The hiring of offensive-minded head coach Liam Coen suggests that the Jaguars are still committed to developing Lawrence rather than moving on from him.
Even though a trade seems unlikely, Pittsburgh’s approach is commendable. Rather than settling for short-term fixes like Russell Wilson or Justin Fields, they are thinking long-term and exploring every possible path to stability at the quarterback position.
