Mike Vrabel delivers concerning update on New England Patriots newcomer despite a promising start
The New England Patriots expected Julian Hill to strengthen their tight end room in 2026. Instead, the offseason addition now faces a lengthy road back before playing a single regular-season snap for his new team.
Head coach Mike Vrabel recently confirmed that Hill will miss the entire 2026 season because of a knee injury suffered during offseason work. The update came as a tough blow for New England, especially after Hill made a strong impression during his first few months with the organization.
The New England Patriots signed Julian Hill to a three-year, $15 million contract in March after he spent the first three seasons of his NFL career with the Miami Dolphins. New England brought him in to add depth behind veteran tight end Hunter Henry and strengthen a position group that needed reliable support. Early signs looked encouraging.
Although offseason practices had only just begun, Hill quickly earned respect inside the building through his work ethic and approach. That made the news of the injury even harder for the coaching staff to process.
During a recent media availability, Mike Vrabel spoke about the setback and its potential impact on both Julian Hill and the team. "Julian won't be able to play this season, plain and simple. Devastating. Awful. I really enjoyed the person and want to have him around here as much as we possibly can. He won't be able to play this season," Vrabel told reporters.
The New England Patriots coach later explained that Hill's value extended beyond the depth chart. In a short time, he had already built strong relationships in the locker room and earned his teammates' trust.
"That's just disappointing because of the impact he made in a short amount of time with his teammates, the person that he is, the way he practiced," Vrabel said. "We want Julian to be a part of us as much as possible, but he's not going to do that on the field this year."
Hill entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the Miami Dolphins in 2023. Over three seasons, he appeared in 45 games and recorded 33 catches for 288 receiving yards.
Now the New England Patriots must move forward without one of their key offseason additions. Hunter Henry remains the top option at tight end, but Julian Hill's absence removes valuable depth before training camp even begins. More importantly, it brings an abrupt halt to what had started as a promising chapter in his New England career.
