Lane Johnson's epic response to Packers’ reported push to ban Eagles’ signature 'Tush Push' move

Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Lane Johnson found humor in the Green Bay Packers' recent attempt to ban the controversial "Tush Push" play. This reaction came after a report from Dianna Russini of The Athletic revealed that the Packers had officially proposed to the NFL's competition committee to eliminate the play, which has been a crucial weapon for the Eagles' offense. Johnson's response on X (formerly Twitter) was simple but telling—he posted a single laughing emoji, capturing his amusement at the Packers' efforts to outlaw the play.

Lane Johnson Amused by Packers' Attempt to Ban the Tush Push

The Green Bay Packers' push to ban the play was not entirely unexpected. Packers president Mark Murphy has been vocal about his disdain for the Tush Push, criticizing it for lacking skill and giving an almost guaranteed first down on short-yardage situations. In an online Q&A, Murphy did not mince words: "I am not a fan of this play. There is no skill involved and it is almost an automatic first down on plays of a yard or less.” He also referenced a controversial moment during the NFC Championship Game, where the Washington Commanders were warned by officials for repeatedly jumping offsides in an attempt to stop the Eagles' Tush Push near the goal line. Murphy suggested that the league should return to the old rule prohibiting players from pushing or aiding the runner, stating, “This would bring back the traditional QB sneak. That worked pretty well for Bart Starr and the Packers in the Ice Bowl.”

The Packers' frustration is understandable, considering how effectively the Eagles utilize the Tush Push. Philadelphia has perfected the play, turning it into an almost unstoppable weapon, particularly in short-yardage situations. The play involves quarterback Jalen Hurts being pushed from behind by teammates, gaining the necessary yardage for first downs or touchdowns. The Eagles' consistent success with this tactic has left opposing teams scrambling to find ways to counter it, leading to growing calls for the play to be banned.

Lane Johnson's lighthearted reaction highlights the Eagles' confidence in their execution of the Tush Push. No team runs the play as effectively as Philadelphia, largely due to the strength and coordination of their offensive line, with Johnson being a key player. His amusement likely stems from the notion that other teams, instead of finding ways to stop the play on the field, are resorting to lobbying for its ban.

However, despite the Packers' attempt, the chances of the Tush Push being banned are uncertain. NFL commissioner Roger Goodell was reported to have initial reservations about the play, as mentioned by Russini on her Scoop City podcast in January. Yet, for the play to be abolished, 24 out of 32 NFL teams would need to vote in favor of the ban, which is no small feat. Until then, the Eagles are likely to continue leveraging their Tush Push advantage, much to the frustration of opponents like the Packers.

The debate surrounding the Tush Push reflects a broader conversation about the evolution of football strategies and the line between innovation and unfair advantage. For now, the Eagles seem to have found a winning formula, and Lane Johnson's laughter suggests they are more than happy to keep pushing forward—literally and figuratively.
