Josh Jacobs is now facing the most serious legal situation of his NFL career after Wisconsin authorities charged the Green Bay Packers running back with five offenses tied to an alleged domestic disturbance. Police say the incident began with a complaint received Saturday morning, before Jacobs was arrested Tuesday and booked into Brown County Jail. The timing has immediately placed the situation under a national spotlight, arriving on the same day Green Bay opened organized team activities and only months after Jacobs finished another productive season as the centerpiece of the Packers’ running game.
What charges were filed against Josh Jacobs after the Wisconsin disturbance complaint?
According to Hobart-Lawrence police chief Michael Renkas, officers responded to a disturbance complaint involving Jacobs at 8:37 a.m. on Saturday. By Tuesday, authorities confirmed the Packers running back had been arrested and booked on five charges: strangulation and suffocation, battery-domestic abuse, criminal damage to property-domestic abuse, disorderly conduct-domestic abuse and intimidation of a victim.
The strangulation and suffocation allegation is the most severe count and is classified as a felony assault charge under Wisconsin law. The remaining allegations are misdemeanors.
“This remains an active and ongoing investigation,” Renkas said in a statement. “No further information will be released at this time.”
Jacobs’ legal team quickly responded after news of the arrest became public. Attorneys David Chesnoff, Richard Schonfeld and Clarence Duchac issued a joint statement strongly denying the accusations.
“Josh vehemently denies the allegations, and this matter is in the early stages of investigation with important evidence that has not yet been made public,” they said. “We ask for fairness and restraint while the judicial process takes its course.”
The Packers organization also avoided detailed comment as the investigation remains active.
“We are aware of the matter involving Josh Jacobs,” a Packers spokesman said. “As it is an ongoing legal situation, we will withhold further comment.”
The NFL acknowledged the arrest as well. League spokesman Brian McCarthy stated that officials “are aware of the report and have been in contact with the club.”
How could the Josh Jacobs arrest affect the Packers and his NFL future?
The arrest lands at a difficult moment for Green Bay because Jacobs is not just another veteran on the roster. He has become one of the team’s offensive anchors since arriving from the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
After signing a four-year, $48 million contract with the Green Bay Packers, Jacobs delivered immediately. He rushed for 929 yards and 13 touchdowns last season after posting 1,329 rushing yards and 15 touchdowns the year before. Earlier in his career, Jacobs also earned All-Pro honors after leading the NFL with 1,653 rushing yards in 2022.
This is not the first legal issue connected to the running back. In 2021, while still with Las Vegas, Jacobs was arrested following a single-car crash on suspicion of DUI. That matter later narrowed to a misdemeanor traffic-related charge, which was closed after he paid a fine.
What makes this situation different is both the seriousness of the accusations and the uncertainty around the league’s next step. The NFL typically reviews cases involving personal conduct separately from the legal process, meaning Jacobs could still face league scrutiny regardless of how the court proceedings develop over the coming months.
