“I’m always jealous”: J.J. Watt admits regret over never sharing an NFL field with his brothers
J.J. Watt has said plenty during his post-retirement media run, but one comment ahead of the Steelers vs. Texans Wild Card game hit closer to home. During ESPN’s ManningCast preview for Monday Night Football, Watt admitted he wished he could have shared a locker room with his brothers in Pittsburgh. It was not a hypothetical take. It came as a personal reflection while discussing family legacies and playoff football.
The timing made it land harder. The Steelers hosted Houston at Acrisure Stadium to close Wild Card Weekend, with T.J. Watt anchoring Pittsburgh’s defense and Derek Watt long remembered for his time with the franchise. J.J., now a CBS NFL analyst, joined Peyton and Eli Manning as a featured guest. When asked whether he ever wanted to play alongside his brothers, he did not dodge the question. He leaned in and told the truth, which fully explains the weight behind the title.
“I’m always jealous,” JJ Watt said on the ManningCast. “They played high school, they played college, and they played NFL together.” The star further added, “I would have loved to, man, but the thing I always talk about is T.J. was in the middle of a contract negotiation there and I wasn’t going to take away any money from his big negotiation that he was going through,” Watt said Monday night on ESPN’s Peyton & Eli. “I very much would have loved it. I would have only come out of retirement for two situations, the Steelers or the Texans, the last couple years. Didn’t end up working out in any capacity.”
That line summed up years of curiosity around a missed possibility. J.J. spent his entire prime with Houston, where he became the face of the franchise and a defensive standard. T.J. built his own Hall of Fame path in Pittsburgh. Derek carved out a respected role as a fullback and special teamer.
Watt’s comment carried more context because of the setting. He said it while previewing a playoff game that featured his former team against the franchise that defined his brother’s career. That overlap gave the moment clarity. It was not a regret. It was appreciation mixed with reality. The ManningCast thrives on moments like this. It pulls insight that standard broadcasts never reach. Watt’s honesty added emotional depth to a game built on pass rush and pressure.
J.J. Watt, who spent the 2025 season calling NFL games for CBS Sports, discussed the personal matchup Monday afternoon on ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show.”
“I have really no idea,” Watt said. “Obviously, I know both of these teams extremely well, not only because of my connections but also because we called them multiple times this year. So I’ve seen them both play. I know them intimately.”
As the Steelers and Texans matchup is live, fans did not hear fantasy talk. They heard a future Hall of Famer admit he wanted one more shared chapter with his brothers. That alone justified the spotlight.

J.J. Watt's ManningCast moment that opened the door to a family what-If
Speaking on the ManningCast during ESPN’s alternate broadcast preview for Steelers vs. Texans, Watt explained what he felt watching the Watt brothers share every level of football except one.“I’m always jealous,” JJ Watt said on the ManningCast.
