He then explained why he views the resignation as significant. “Resigning is actually a smart play. I do not think her career is over, but when you resign, it feels like you are saying, ‘you got me,’” he added during the same episode. Carton further said, "I believe that her resignation confirms that there was a relationship.”

However, no confirmed evidence has established any relationship between Russini and Vrabel. Both have denied the allegations. Reports and photos published earlier in the week showed the two together during the NFL Combine, including time spent at a hotel. Still, those images alone do not prove an affair.


Russini addressed the situation directly in her resignation letter to “The Athletic” executive editor Steven Ginsberg on April 15. “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career, and I stand behind every story I have ever published,” she wrote.


She also made it clear why she chose to leave early. “I have no interest in submitting to a public inquiry that has already caused far more damage than I am willing to accept,” she added.
