Ben Roethlisberger explains why the Steelers should prioritize an offensive-minded head coach after the Mike Tomlin era
For the first time in nearly twenty years, the Pittsburgh Steelers are staring at a future without the steady presence of Mike Tomlin on the sideline. For a fan base used to consistency, that reality feels strange. Coaching searches are unfamiliar territory in Pittsburgh, and this one carries more weight than most. The next hire will not just replace a coach. It will define how the Steelers try to climb back into real contention after years of hovering in the middle.
As interviews roll on, the conversation around the team has shifted from names to philosophy. This is no longer just about who is qualified. It is about what the Steelers actually need. Former players, fans, and league insiders all seem to agree on one thing. The defense is not the problem. The offense is.
Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger addressed that concern head-on, making it clear his hesitation has nothing to do with Flores’ ability and everything to do with direction. “I love Brian Flores. I think he’d be great,” Roethlisberger said, in a recent conversation on Channel Seven’s talk show. “The only downside I see is he’s a defensive-minded guy, and it’s just you heard me say I want offense… My concern with bringing in a young hotshot offensive coordinator is he’s going to probably be gone in a couple years. So now you’re looking for another coordinator, and you’re you’re constantly rotating coordinators. I would I would love to get someone again, you get a head coach, offensive coordinator, minded guy, an Andy Reid type, Sean McVay type, the Ben Johnson.”
That viewpoint is not new. Roethlisberger has repeated it recently, explaining how offensive head coaches manage games differently and why that matters for quarterbacks. “Let’s bring a head coach in that’s offensive-minded and allow him to then bring in a defensive coordinator. The best offensive-minded head coaches that call plays, you know what they do on defense? They’re sitting on the bench, talking to their quarterback, while their defense is on the field, because they’re like, ‘You got that. I trust my defensive coordinator to take care of this.'”
The numbers give that argument real weight. Pittsburgh finished 10-7, but the offense ranked 25th in the league. They totaled 6,068 yards, averaged 5.3 yards per play, and struggled to find consistency. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers had an uneven season, and the low point came in a 35-25 loss to Green Bay. Despite forcing six turnovers, the Steelers managed just three points, with Rodgers completing only 51.6 percent of his passes.
That context has made offense the clear priority, and it has helped elevate another name in the process. Former Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy has emerged as a strong candidate. League insiders Adam Schefter and Tom Pelissero reported that McCarthy is scheduled to interview on January 21. A Pittsburgh native, McCarthy began his coaching career at the University of Pittsburgh and later won a Super Bowl with Green Bay, beating the Steelers in Super Bowl XLV.
A potential reunion with Rodgers adds intrigue, especially with the quarterback currently a free agent and openly considering retirement. For a franchise that has not advanced beyond the opening week of the playoffs in nearly nine years, the message is clear. Stability mattered for a long time. Now, evolution matters more. If the Steelers want a different outcome, the next head coach may need to think offense first.

Why the Steelers’ next head coach search is centered on fixing the offense
One of the early candidates to draw serious attention was Brian Flores, who recently completed an in-person interview with the Steelers. Flores has rebuilt his standing around the league after his stint as head coach of the Miami Dolphins and has done impressive work turning Minnesota’s defense into one of the league’s strongest units. Still, questions linger about whether his background aligns with Pittsburgh’s biggest need.Former Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger addressed that concern head-on, making it clear his hesitation has nothing to do with Flores’ ability and everything to do with direction.
