"They can fire me": Fearless Charles Barkley delivers explosive rant amid feud with ESPN
Hall of Famer Charles Barkley, who played as a power forward, has always been special both on and off the court. After a very successful basketball career, Barkley turned to broadcasting, where his sharp personality and basketball mind quickly made him a fan favorite. Joining “Inside The NBA” on TNT alongside Ernie Johnson, Shaquille O’Neal, and Kenny Smith, Barkley helped turn the show into more than just a pregame program for basketball fans across the country.
Following TNT’s loss of NBA rights, the show’s future became uncertain. Instead of disappearing, Inside the NBA was licensed to ESPN, offering a new but different approach. While Barkley never wanted to appear on every ESPN platform, he has recently voiced frustration over the team’s limited airtime this season, sparking conversations about how the iconic crew fits into the network’s current basketball coverage.
Despite the excitement of moving to ESPN, Barkley’s enthusiasm has been tempered by the network’s approach to the show. The first half of the NBA season saw very few appearances by the Inside the NBA team, leaving Barkley and his colleagues with less time to be present and analyze games in the way fans had expected. Recently on “The Dan LeBatard Show”, Barkley admitted:
“When I was talking about working all the time, I’m not going to do all these d--- shows. I’m not going to be on ESPN 1, 2, 3, Deportes, Nacho, Echo, whatever they call it. I’m not going to be doing all that. But I wish we’d have been on more during the first half of the season.”
Barkley added by saying:
“Well, they can fire me. I got seven years left on my contract. I’m 100% retired, but if I can do something just a little bit stupid, so they have to fire me. They don’t have to pay me for the whole seven years”.
Charles Barkley signed a 10-year, $210 million contract with ESPN in 2022, taking on the role of NBA analyst for the Inside the NBA” show when the show shifted from TNT, after ESPN bought the show's rights. Charles Barkley implied that even if he didn't want to be over consumed by the show, he wished the team had more opportunities to appear this season. For Barkley, it was not just about being on TV, but about keeping basketball spirit alive among fans.
After joining “Inside The NBA", it gave Barkley a platform to combine his basketball knowledge with his lively personality. The show’s mix of serious sports analysis along with Barkley’s presence, helped define the program’s identity and helped him become a household name for fans.
