Mark Cuban and local investors join hands to buyback Dallas Mavericks

After Mark Cuban sold 73% of his stake to Miriam Adelson and the Dumont family for approximately $3.5 billion in December 2023, he would have never thought that things would go haywire, requiring him to step in again. Despite retaining only 27% stakes, an unidentified Dallas-based investor group has expressed formal interest in partnering with minority owner Mark Cuban to reacquire the Dallas Mavericks from team governor Patrick Dumont, as reported by The Stein Line.

The news has arrived during a period of intense fan dissatisfaction and organizational upheaval. Though Cooper Flagg’s addition has sparked some optimism, Mavs' 19-33 record is dousing the playoff dreams.

Mark Cuban and a local investor group wish to buy-back Mavs

Mark Cuban bought the Dallas Mavericks in 2000 from Ross Perot Jr. for $285 million. After two decades, the price of the franchise was evaluated to be around $3.5 billion in 2023 when Cuban sold it.

Despite stepping away from the daily operations, Cuban maintained a minority stake in the team. But the final decision-making was no longer in his hands. In February 2025, General Manager Nico Harrison traded Mavs icon Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers in exchange for an injury-prone Anthony Davis. The move sparked immediate outrage, from protests in the front office to "Fire Nico" chants in the arena. The backlash eventually resulted in Harrison's firing in November 2025 after a disastrous 3-8 start in the 2025-26 season.



Cuban on Doncic’s trade told NBA reporter Marc Stein, "It was a mistake and I wish they would have spoken to me first. I'm happy for Luka. And I'm happy for Mavs fans that we've got (rookie Cooper Flag), even though I recognize that we all still miss Luka. The people responsible for that are for the most part gone, which I think was necessary."

Can Dallas Mavericks expect a management shift once again?

The Stein Line also reported that despite the interest shown for a buy-out, sources close to Dumont family have said “the family remains excited about the future of the franchise and the Cooper Flagg era.”

The intention behind drafting Cooper Flagg as the #1 overpick after winning the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery with just a 1.8% chance was to reset the roster around this sensational rookie. And Flagg has lived up to the hype. He leads the Mavs in total points, average scoring, and steals per game.

Anthony Davis' trade to the Washington Wizards further signaled the management's new shift towards building a championship-worthy roster. The Dumont family has high expectation with the young talents, and for now, they’ll continue to hold the keys to a franchise that is valued at $5.1 billion by Forbes (October 2025).
