LeBron James appears to be treating his nerve damage with "patience." ESPN's Shams Charania reported that
NBA star James is anticipated to return in the middle of November. Recently, the 40-year-old was diagnosed with a right-side sciatica injury, making him the first NBA player to play in his 23rd season. Hence, Luka Dončić will have to shoulder a greater workload to start the season while James is out.
LeBron James takes a patient approach to recovery as he prepares for an emotional mid-season comeback
Before making his 2025–26 season debut, LeBron James will be out for over a month. According to ESPN's Shams Charania, James has been diagnosed with sciatica and is expected to make a comeback in mid-November. James was anticipated to miss three to four weeks when the
Los Angeles Lakers disclosed his injury last Thursday.
Due to his "nerve irritation in his glute," the 21-time All-Star missed both training camp and preseason games. The diagnostic eventually revealed that James will be out for around three to four weeks, missing the whole preseason schedule in addition to a few regular season games. He had been hoping to return for the Lakers' season opener on October 21, though.
Nevertheless, James is reportedly taking his time recovering from the injury. Charania also provided coverage during Wednesday's "NBA Countdown." In the most recent
NBA Countdown broadcast, Charania informed Malika Andrews that LeBron James and the Lakers are hoping to return in the middle of November.
According to Charania,
“October 30 would be the earliest that the Lakers would be officially re-evaluating LeBron James, but it is expected that he will need at least a few weeks after that point."
He further said:
“A source told me tonight LeBron will be taking a patient approach with this rehab from nerve injury. And so the ramp up process for this will be a lot of basketball shape conditioning work. As I reported last week on NBA Today, LeBron James first suffered this never issue during an on-court workout in late July, early August. He wasn’t able to have that normal LeBron James offseason that we are accustomed to.”
He then concluded:
“And as a superhuman that he has been throughout his NBA career. He is turning 41 on December 21, and is in year 23. So, that’s the timeline on LeBron James at some point in November, likely around that mid November range.”
LeBron James, the NBA's oldest active player, is nearing
retirement. The four-time champion wishes to finish his incredible career on a positive note. This may be the reason why he has been more cautious about injuries lately.
LeBron James faces strategic recovery as sciatica sidelines the L.A. Lakers superstar
In early October, James was diagnosed with sciatica after missing training camp because of glute soreness. The staff promised to reassess James in three to four weeks. Since October 30 is the earliest date the Lakers could reassess James' recovery,
Charania described it as a crucial date in James' return.
According to Charania, James allegedly suffered the injury while working out on the court in late July or early August. He will now reportedly exercise caution while recovering from the problem. Meanwhile, James exercised his $52.6 million player option for this season after averaging 24.4 points, 8.2 assists, and 7.8 rebounds in 70 games during the regular season the previous year.
However, it later became awkward because his agent,
Rich Paul, made a suggestion about a potential trade demand if the L.A. Lakers didn't want him anymore.
