NEW DELHI: The NBA has mandated Charlotte Hornets' All-Star guard LaMelo Ball to conceal a tattoo located beneath his left ear, citing a breach of the league's policy against displaying commercial logos on players' bodies. The tattoo, featuring the initials LF, represents LaFrance, Ball's middle name, and the name of his clothing line.
Sources close to Ball have suggested that the enforcement of the league's tattoo policy has been inconsistent. Despite the ongoing dispute, Ball opted to cover the tattoo to avoid potential fines before the recent game against the Miami Heat. He plans to keep it concealed during the upcoming mid-season tournament game against the Milwaukee Bucks.
This isn't the first time a member of the Ball family has faced such a situation. Lonzo Ball, LaMelo's elder brother and guard, had to conceal a Big Baller Brand tattoo in 2018 at the league's request. At the time, Lonzo argued that he adopted the LF initials before it became a brand and clarified that they corresponded to his middle name and his uncle's name.
Ball's representatives presented past instances of players displaying what could be considered corporate logos on their skin, mentioning players with Jordan Brand, Michelin, and Warner Brothers designs. However, the NBA refuted this argument, stating that those players did not have formal business relationships with the companies.
LaMelo Ball, now in his fourth league year on a five-year contract worth up to USD 260 million, continues to prove his worth. As the No. 3 overall pick in the 2020 draft, he has achieved significant milestones, including winning the 2021 NBA Rookie of the Year and earning his first All-Star recognition in 2022.
