LeBron James is among the most decorated basketball players to have ever played in the NBA. Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry recently agreed on the same. He spoke in front of Steve Nash on the Mind the Game podcast about growing up in a competitive home with his brother Seth, how his father Dell taught him how to be a pro, and the similarities between basketball and golf.
James was also present and discussed the prospect of competing in the 2028 Olympics. Steph then had a conversation with James and Nash about his basketball journey. The three also discussed how Steve Kerr's Warriors offence was influenced by FC Barcelona's style of play, and Steph's realization that he was having an impact on the next generation of basketball players.
LeBron James hints at Olympic exit as Stephen Curry reflects on future with Team USA
James' experience with the USA men's Olympic basketball team is part of this legacy, which he most recently added to in 2024 when he won gold for the third time in his career. In episode two of his Mind The Game podcast, which features his Olympic colleague Steph Curry, the topic of whether he has one more appearance left was answered.
Steve Nash asked the icons:
“You think you got an LA Olympics in? When is that? Is that next? What's the next one?”
To this, James said:
“You already know my answer, so don’t even, don’t even ask. I will be watching it from Cabo.”
Stephen Curry then said:
“It is the uh the opposite answer to what I told him last year. It's like, God willing, I still have the choice and the physical option to be like, I could actually impact the team. Never say never, but I highly doubt it. I highly doubt it. love to be a part of the we can't stop what we just did. We're going to top those last two games…”
James has essentially ruled out competing in the 2028 Summer Olympics by hinting that he will be finishing up his NBA career within the next one to two seasons. He has previously won four Olympic medals: gold in 2008, 2012, and 2024; bronze in 2004. He has been selected for Team USA for the longest period of time between his most recent appearance and the one before it.
LeBron won MVP in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris after averaging 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, and 8.5 assists per game. In addition, he was selected to the Olympic All-Star Five and recorded a team-high 27.5 minutes per game.
James has solidified his place in basketball history overall, not just in Olympic history. Now, he probably would prefer to play a more supporting role behind today's talents while still providing insight.
