Former ESPN host
Michelle Beadle has sided with NBA legend
Charles Barkley in his brutal critique of ESPN’s basketball coverage, particularly its alleged obsession with the
Los Angeles Lakers and
LeBron James. Barkley recently called out ESPN for its repetitive narratives, saying the network focuses too much on the same topics instead of highlighting other top NBA teams, including the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Speaking on TNT,
Charles Barkley recently criticized ESPN’s analysis and even singled out former NBA player and current analyst
Kendrick Perkins, calling him an “idiot and a fool” for suggesting that the Lakers' acquisition of Luka Doncic had “saved the NBA.” Barkley dismissed the notion, pointing out that the Lakers simply had a strong two-week stretch but were not the league’s sole storyline. “He said the Lakers saved the NBA season, and them fools, on the other network, which we’re going to be working for next year—that’s all they talk about,” Barkley said.
Michelle Beadle, now a host on Mad Dog Sports Radio, hailed Barkley’s comments, revealing her own frustrations with ESPN’s content strategy during her tenure at the network. She shared that producers routinely pushed discussions about the Lakers and the Dallas Cowboys, even when other stories were more relevant.
“I worked there. We had to just always talk about the Lakers,” Beadle admitted. “We always talked about the Cowboys. It’s brain-numbing, formulated bulls***. There were days where it was like, ‘How are we forcing a story about this? There are actually stories that people might care about.’”
“Because here's the thing about that place, it is national, it is global in some places. I get it, you think that's what moves the needle, but Barkley's right and this is what we've been trying to say all damn season. There are fun stories happening right now,” she continued.
This isn’t the first time Beadle has been vocal about ESPN’s handling of NBA coverage. In 2021, she claimed that
LeBron James himself attempted to get her fired from the network after she mocked The Decision, the infamous 2010 TV special where James announced his move to the Miami Heat. She has since remained an outspoken critic of what she perceives as ESPN’s overemphasis on a few select players.
Beadle also praised Barkley’s fearless approach to criticism, noting that he doesn’t hesitate to call people out by name. “I just love that Barkley calls people by name. I respect that,” she said. She acknowledged that while Kendrick Perkins had already responded to Barkley’s remarks, she doubted anything significant would come of it. “There’s gonna be a lot of hugging-it-out stuff when they see each other. It always is. I wish people held grudges like I hold grudges,” Beadle joked.
