NEW DELHI: India's men's freestyle wrestlers were unable to match the success of their female counterparts at the Under-17 World Championships in Amman, Jordan, as none of the five competitors made it to the semifinals. Out of the five, Harsh and Vevik managed to win a round each.
Harsh (48kg) began with a 6-2 win over Erbol Bolotov but lost to Chingis Saryglar in the quarterfinals, PTI reported.
In the 55kg category, Jaiveer Singh lost on criteria (3-3) to Azatberdi Ashyrgulyev in the first round, ending his chances when Ashyrgulyev lost in the quarterfinals.
In the 65kg category, Sagar lost his qualification bout 5-7 to Bakdaulet Akimzhan. Sagar now waits to see if the repechage route will open for him.
Vevik started with an 11-4 victory over Aliaksei Kuryla but was defeated by Nikoloz Maisuradze by technical superiority in the quarterfinals. In the 110kg category, Jaspooran Singh lost on criteria (1-1) to Kazakhstan's Yedige Kassimbek.
On the women's side, four new world champions emerged. In addition, Kajal (69kg) and Shrutika Shivaji Patil (46kg) are in contention for gold medals.
Aditi Kumari (43kg), Neha (57kg), Pulkit (65kg), and Mansi Lather (73kg) have each secured world titles in their respective categories.
