Bajrang Punia questions NADA's decision to provisionally suspend him
NEW DELHI: Bajrang Punia, celebrated as an Olympic bronze medallist, finds himself in a precarious situation as the National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) has imposed a provisional suspension.
The suspension stems from his failure to provide a urine sample during the trials held in Sonipat on March 10, a development confirmed by a reliable source.
"With subject to paragraph 4:1:2 below and in accordance with article 7.4 of the NADR 2021, Bajrang Punia has been immediately provisionally suspended from participation in any competition or activity prior to the final decision reached at a hearing in this matter," read an official release from NADA dated April 23.
In the Paris Olympics year, this suspension casts a shadow over Punia's participation in any forthcoming competitions or trials until the suspension is lifted. His absence from the arena leaves a void not only in the wrestling community but also in the hearts of his fans who have rallied behind him in his triumphs.
Meanwhile, questioning NADA's decision, Punia wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "I want to clarify the news about me being asked to take a dope test!!! I never refused to give my sample to NADA officials, I requested them to first answer me as to what action they took on the expired kit they brought to take my sample and then take my dope test. My lawyer Vidush Singhania will reply to this letter in time."
The dope-collecting officer's report stated that the athlete departed the venue despite being warned that his refusal to provide a sample would result in a violation of anti-doping regulations.
"Punia, surrounded by his supporters, continuously repeated his statement and immediately left the venue refusing to give a dope sample," the DCO stated in his report.
The athlete was given until May 7 to submit a written explanation for his refusal to provide the required documentation and urine sample.
The letter informed the athlete that if he accepted the consequences, the matter would be resolved without further disciplinary action, subject to the right of appeal. However, if he disagreed with the consequences, the case would be referred to the anti-doping disciplinary panel for adjudication.
