NEW DELHI: Agra’s Paras Gupta has won the inaugural edition of the H S Bhogal memorial 6-Red snooker tournament, defeating former junior national snooker champion, Avinash from Delhi, in a nail-biting final which lasted for almost four hours.
In a battle of fluctuating fortunes, it was five-all in the best of 11 final and, in the deciding frame, a stalemate occurred on the green/black ball.
Black was stuck on the pocket and green by its side, with both the players looking to play safe and were touching the green ball slowly without disturbing the black to avoid a black pot. A slightest touch on black would have pocketed the ball, resulting in a foul.
The deadlock continued for three minutes before the referee was called in. He suggested a ‘re-rack’ after consulting both the players, to which they agreed. If the referee thinks a position of stalemate exists, he/she shall offer the players the option of re-starting the frame. In the re-rack frame, Paras showed his class and won with consummate ease by capitalising on his opponent’s mistake. Avinash conceded the 11th frame when he needed two snookers.
Earlier in the semifinals, Paras had defeated Luv Kukreja 5-4 and Avinash got the better of Divya Sharma 5-2. The final was attended by Delhi Billiards and Snooker Association (DBSA) president, Vijay Goel, and its secretary general Ravi Tandon, among others. Vikram Singh, son of H S Bhogal in whose memory the tournament was organised, also graced the occasion.
