Late on Wednesday night, the 18-year-old Khan finished sixth in heat one in 8 minutes 45.12 seconds, earning a spot in the August 31 final, as per PTI.

The top eight finishers in each of the two preliminary races advance to the main event.

Rajesh, a 19-year-old from Rajasthan, formerly held the national U20 record in this event with a time of 8:50.12 seconds, which he achieved while placing fourth in the Federation Cup National Senior Championships in May in Bhubaneswar.

Khan's previous personal best was 8:51.75 seconds, set in June of last year while he was competing in and earning a silver at the Asian U20 Championships in Korea.

Prior to Rajesh breaking the record, it was also a national record at the time.
