Ingebrigtsen crossed the finish line in an astonishing time of seven minutes 17.55 seconds. This incredible performance surpassed the previous record, set by Daniel Komen of Kenya in 1996, by more than three seconds. Komen's record, which he established in Rieti, Italy, had been 7:20.67.

Ingebrigtsen surpassed his personal record from September of the previous year by nearly three seconds, which was also faster than Komen's record-setting time.

Upon finishing the race and glancing at his time, the 23-year-old was astounded. Ingebrigtsen was awarded a $50,000 cheque, which he held up in front of the clock for a photograph.

Just three days prior, the Norwegian had achieved a small victory over American Cole Hocker by winning the men's 1,500m event in Lausanne with a time of 3:27.83. This win came two weeks after Hocker had stunned the Olympic field by securing the gold medal in Paris.
