Walt Harris has waited years for this moment. After a long and painful fight for justice, the man accused of killing his stepdaughter Aniah Blanchard, has now been found guilty. The case, which shook the MMA world back in 2019, has finally reached a major turning point. A jury in Alabama has convicted Ibraheem Yazeed, 36, of murder and felony murder in the death of 19-year-old Aniah Blanchard. The verdict came after a six-day trial, as reported by the Alabama Attorney General’s office. While the state had pushed for the death penalty, this verdict means Yazeed will not face execution. Instead, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. His final sentencing is set for May 7, when the court will decide his fate. The Attorney General’s office said, “Today, a Macon County jury returned a murder verdict in the case of Aniah Blanchard. Although we are disappointed that this outcome does not allow for the death penalty, we intend to seek the maximum sentence allowed by law when the defendant is sentenced on May 7th.

Walt Harris reflects on painful journey as Aniah Blanchard's case brings long-awaited justice

The case goes back to October 23, 2019, when Aniah Blanchard went missing in Auburn, Alabama. She was last seen on CCTV at a convenience store.
Ibraheem Yazeed was also seen at the same place around the same time. Later, a witness told police that Yazeed forced her into her own car.Two days later, her car was found in Montgomery. There was a large amount of blood inside, which raised serious fears. A month later, her body was found in a wooded area in Macon County. An autopsy confirmed she died from a gunshot wound. During the trial, prosecutors said she was first shot inside her car and later shot again. At the time of the crime, Yazeed was already out on bail for serious charges, including kidnapping and robbery. This led Walt Harris and his wife Angela to push for a change in the law. Their efforts helped bring “Aniah’s Law,” which allows judges to deny bail to people accused of violent crimes. The law was passed in Alabama in 2022.For Harris, the loss changed everything. Before his comeback fight in 2020, he spoke about his emotions. “She was probably my biggest fan,” he said. “I feel like I’m being powered by a whole different source now. It’s a different fire right now for me… I know I’m doing something for her.”He added, “Anybody who gets in the cage with me at this point, it’s dangerous for that person… you’re not going to just be fighting me. You’re going to be fighting me and her.”Harris returned to the UFC with heavy emotions but struggled in the cage. He lost to Alistair Overeem in 2020 and later went on a three-fight losing streak. His last fight came in June 2021.Now, after more than six years, this verdict brings some closure. While nothing can undo the loss, the possibility of a life sentence gives the family a sense that justice is finally being served.
