Kazuma Okamoto is officially a Toronto Blue Jays player, and his arrival is already changing the conversation around the team’s infield. The Japanese star agreed to a four-year, $60 million deal on Saturday, and the move was confirmed by the club on social media. The signing adds power to the lineup and raises clear questions about where everyone fits next.

On Sunday, Blue Jays insider Keegan Matheson spoke on TSN’s SportsCentre and shared early clarity. He explained how Kazuma Okamoto could be used, what this means for Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and how Ernie Clement’s role has already shifted following the move.

Kazuma Okamoto’s Role Explained by Insider Keegan Matheson After Blue Jays Signing

According to Keegan Matheson, Kazuma Okamoto is expected to play third base for the Toronto Blue Jays. Speaking on Sunday in Toronto during the TSN broadcast, Matheson said the team values his bat first and foremost.

“I think he’ll play third base for the Blue Jays,” Matheson said when asked how Okamoto fits into the lineup. He described Okamoto as one of the top power hitters in Japan and a long-time face of the Yomiuri Giants.

Matheson added that the Blue Jays are focused on the offense Okamoto brings. “He’s had six seasons with 30 or more home runs,” he said. “He even hit 41 in one year. We’ll see how it carries over, but this bat plays.”

Okamoto joins the team after 11 seasons in Japan, where he posted a .277 batting average with 248 home runs and 717 RBIs. In the 2023 World Baseball Classic final, he hit a key home run off Kyle Freeland to help Japan beat the United States 3–2.



Matheson also explained how Vladimir Guerrero Jr. fits in after the signing. He said Okamoto could back up Guerrero at first base on off days, but that Guerrero’s role remains secure.

“Maybe he gives Vladdy a day off here and there,” Matheson said. “But you’re looking at the upside with the bat.”

As for Ernie Clement, Matheson confirmed a change has already happened. Clement has moved from third base to second base to make room for Okamoto.

Matheson also noted the bigger picture. He said the Blue Jays have wanted a strong presence in the Japanese market for years. “There are going to be a lot of eyes on this player,” he said, adding that Toronto may still make more moves before the offseason ends.

The Blue Jays announced Okamoto’s signing on X with a simple message in Japanese saying, “Hello,” marking a new chapter for the franchise.
