Who is Laila Edwards? Team USA’s Ice Hockey star creates history at 22 years of age with this unique record

Laila Edwards created a landmark moment at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics on 5 February. The 22-year-old from Cleveland Heights, Ohio became the first Black woman to compete in an Olympic ice hockey tournament for the United States. She also recorded her first Olympic point in a 5-1 opening win over Czechia. Her debut quickly became one of the most talked-about stories of the Games as fans and athletes celebrated the historic achievement.

The young defender joined a small group of players who helped diversify Olympic ice hockey. Although several Black women previously played in development programs, none had represented the senior U.S. women’s Olympic team. Edwards understands the importance of the moment. She said she was proud to represent others and hoped her presence would inspire future players. Her performance on the ice, along with her story, has already drawn attention beyond the hockey world.

Laila Edwards explained that she feels strong pride in the achievement and wants to accept the responsibility because visibility is important. Speaking to the Olympics official website, she acknowledged it can feel uncomfortable at times but believes the effort is worthwhile for younger athletes.


She added that entering arenas where few people share your background can feel intimidating. However, seeing more diverse players enjoying hockey can build confidence and encourage participation.

Her journey has attracted support from fellow Cleveland Heights natives Travis and Jason Kelce. The Super Bowl champions helped her family attend the Games. Edwards said their presence gave her extra motivation and comfort.

On the ice, she admitted she felt nervous but satisfied with her first match performance. She assisted on the opening goal scored by alternate captain Alex Carpenter. Originally known as a forward, Edwards requested a defensive role with the national team. Head coach John Wroblewski supported her decision, saying the request came from the player and the staff wanted to help her chase her dream.

Teammate Megan Keller praised Edwards’ ability and said she is enjoyable to play alongside and trustworthy in any situation. Edwards responded that skating with Keller has been one of the best experiences of her career and she admires her both as a player and person.

Team USA will next face Switzerland, and Edwards is expected to remain part of the top defensive pairing as her Olympic journey continues.
