Argentina’s preparations for the FIFA World Cup 2026 have been overshadowed by an unexpected security mistake. Passport details of captain Lionel Messi and every member of the Argentina national team were accidentally exposed before a World Cup warm-up match against Iceland in Alabama. The leak happened after an official team sheet containing sensitive information was released without properly hiding the passport numbers.

The incident occurred only days before the start of the tournament in the United States, Mexico, and Canada. Several Argentine media outlets published the team sheet after receiving it, unknowingly revealing private information belonging to the entire squad. The breach has raised concerns about data security and tournament operations as the defending world champions prepare to begin their title defense later this month.

The security error took place before Argentina’s friendly match against Iceland at Jordan-Hare Stadium in Auburn, Alabama. Team sheets are usually submitted to match officials shortly before kick-off. In some cases, they include passport details for identification purposes. However, such information is normally removed before documents are shared publicly.


That process failed on this occasion. Passport numbers belonging to Messi, Lisandro Martinez, Enzo Fernandez, and the rest of the Argentina squad remained visible. The information was then circulated by several local media organizations.

Interestingly, Iceland avoided a similar issue. Their submitted team sheet did not contain passport numbers, meaning no personal information was exposed.

The friendly was arranged by Road to ’26, a company involved in organizing several pre-World Cup matches. Despite the off-field controversy, Argentina delivered an impressive performance in front of more than 88K spectators.

Argentina secured a comfortable 3-0 victory over Iceland. Valentin Barco opened the scoring before Messi entered the match in the 70th minute. The 38-year-old immediately made an impact. He earned a penalty and calmly converted it to double Argentina’s advantage.

Messi also helped create the team’s third goal. His accurate pass found Rodrigo de Paul, who then set up Thiago Almada to score. The Inter Miami star looked fit and confident after recently recovering from a hamstring injury.

Neither FIFA nor the Argentine Football Association has released an official statement regarding the passport leak. Argentina will begin their World Cup campaign against Algeria on June 17 and will hope the focus quickly returns to football rather than an embarrassing security lapse.
