“At first, I didn’t really like it, but I’m so glad she did it now.”

Her connection to China is not just about language. As she told ESPN in a 2021 interview, “Since I was little, I’ve always said when I’m in the US, I’m American, but when I’m in China, I’m Chinese.”

Gu has also shared that she spent around 30 percent of her early years in Beijing. She traveled there often during summers and lived in China for extended periods while growing up. During those stays, she used Mandarin in daily life with family and friends.

Now, about her decision to compete for China. In 2019, at age 15, she announced she would represent China instead of the United States. Explaining her choice, she said, “The opportunity to help inspire millions of young people where my mom was born, during the 2022 Beijing Olympic Winter Games, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Even after that switch, her life remained tied to America. She trained in the U.S., studied there, and later enrolled at Stanford University. She still lives in the United States when not competing.
