NEW DELHI: Former Odisha chief minister Naveen Patnaik and the state government have demonstrated a deep commitment to field hockey, culminating in significant celebrations following the Indian men's team's bronze medal win at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
This achievement marks the first time in 52 years that Team India has secured consecutive Olympic bronze medals in men's hockey, solidifying the team's resurgence as a global force.
Patnaik, who spearheaded the Odisha government's sponsorship of the national team, met with the players on Thursday, expressing immense pride in their accomplishment.
"Immense pleasure meeting victorious #IndianHockey Team after winning coveted bronze medal in #ParisOlympics2024. Hockey is not just a sport; it is a way of life in #Odisha. We always share a special bond with this beautiful game. May the team continue its winning momentum and bring more glory for the nation and the state," Patnaik wrote in a post on X.
The current chief minister's sentiments were echoed in a formal felicitation ceremony held on Wednesday at Bhubaneswar's Kalinga Stadium, where Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi honoured the team.
Beyond accolades, the Odisha government has announced substantial financial rewards for the team. Amit Rohidas, a key defender, will receive ₹4 crore, while each player will receive ₹15 lakh, and support staff members will receive ₹10 lakh each.
Harmanpreet Singh, captain of the Indian men's hockey team, emerged as the top goal scorer in the tournament with an impressive 10 goals in eight matches, surpassing Australian Blake Govers' seven goals.
India's overall performance at the Paris Olympics, finishing 71st in the medal tally, was led by the United States with 126 medals.
However, the hockey team's triumph resonates deeply within Odisha, reinforcing the state's identity as a hub for hockey excellence and its commitment to nurturing future generations of athletes.
