NEW DELHI: Following a series of pitch invasions during the Portugal vs. Turkey match on Saturday, UEFA has announced its commitment to bolstering security measures for the remainder of Euro 2024. The incidents, which involved multiple fans attempting to take selfies with Portuguese captain Cristiano Ronaldo, have raised concerns about player safety and overall tournament security.

During the Group F match in Dortmund, at least five individuals breached security and entered the field of play. While one young boy successfully posed for a photo with Ronaldo, subsequent attempts were thwarted by security personnel. One incident even saw a security guard collide with Portuguese player Goncalo Ramos while attempting to apprehend a pitch invader.

UEFA, in a statement to AFP, emphasized its unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and security of all individuals present at Euro 2024 venues.

"Safety and security in the stadium, on the pitch and at team facilities are the ultimate priority for UEFA. To this end, additional safety measures will be deployed in the stadiums to further meet the requirements of the tournament, and to prevent such incidents," the statement reads.

While the nature of these enhanced measures remains unspecified, it is anticipated that they will involve increased security presence, stricter access control measures, and potentially, more rigorous screening procedures at stadium entry points.

UEFA has adopted a firm stance against such behaviour, stating that any individuals entering the field of play without authorization will face severe consequences. These include immediate ejection from the stadium, bans from attending future matches, and potential criminal charges for trespassing.

The incidents have sparked debate regarding fan behaviour and the responsibility of tournament organizers to ensure a safe environment. Portuguese coach Roberto Martinez, while acknowledging the seemingly harmless intentions of the individuals involved in Saturday's incidents, expressed concern over the potential for escalation.

"It is a concern because today we were lucky that the intentions of the fans were good. It is a very difficult moment if those intentions are wrong... probably we should give a message to the fans that it is not the right way," said Martinez.
