KOLKATA:

Aizawl FC

assistant coach Lalsangzuala Hmar has tested positive for Covid-19 and was unavailable for their

I-League

opener against

Punjab FC

which the northeast club lost at Kalyani Stadium on Saturday.

Hmar, who has been coaching Aizawl FC before coming down to Kolkata in the absence of head coach Stanley Rosario, tested positive for the virus on December 30 upon arrival in Kolkata and has been in quarantine forcing the team’s assistant manager Gosen Rammawia to take up the coaching role.

"It was during his second Covid test upon arrival in Kolkata that he tested positive. He was retested 24 hours later and the result was again positive. As a result, he has been asked to stay in quarantine for 17 days after which he will be tested again," said an official in the know of things.

Hmar, who earlier coached the Mizoram football team and helped them reach the Santosh Trophy semifinals in 2018, however, has shown no symptoms and been doing well.

The players and other team officials have been tested thrice so far in Kolkata and everybody has returned a negative result. Even before coming down to the city, they went through three Covid-19 and none of them were positive.

Aizawl won the I-League in the 2016-17 season and are looking to win it once more this time around. It will be quite a feat if they can pull it off in spite of the obstacles. Meanwhile, Rosario, who also tested positive for Covid-19 last year, is expected to join the club next month.
