South Africa's Twenty20 squad for the upcoming three-match series against the West Indies features two new faces, as announced by Cricket South Africa on Wednesday.
Kwena Maphaka, an 18-year-old fast bowler who was named player of the tournament at the recent under-19 World Cup in South Africa and subsequently secured an Indian Premier League contract, has been called up for the first time. Joining him is all-rounder Jason Smith, who showcased his batting prowess and bowling skills in domestic T20 competition.
The South African team, consisting of 15 players, is set to return to the Caribbean after their runner-up finish to India at the T20 World Cup in June. However, the squad has undergone changes, with several key players absent due to various reasons.
South Africa Squad: - Aiden Markram (Titans, captain), Ottneil Baartman (Dolphins), Nandre Burger (Western Province), Donovan Ferreira (Titans), Bjorn Fortuin, Reeza Hendricks (both Lions), Patrick Kruger (Warriors), Kwena Maphaka, Wiaan Mulder (both Lions), Lungi Ngidi (Titans), Ryan Rickelton (Lions), Jason Smith (Dolphins), Tristan Stubbs (Warriors), Rassie van der Dussen (Lions), Lizaad Williams (Titans).
Coach Rob Walter explained, "Several players were not considered for this series due to either injury, being in a conditioning block that is related to workload management, or their participation in ongoing T20 leagues.”
Walter emphasized the importance of this tour in terms of player development and exposure to international competition.
"This tour allows us to continue developing our player pool whilst maintaining the core of experienced players. It will also expose our emerging talent to quality international opposition, similar to the last time we played against the West Indies in May," he was quoted by Reuters.
Regarding Maphaka's inclusion, Walter added, "Kwena has been identified as a player with significant potential, and this tour presents a great opportunity to include him in the Proteas environment and gain valuable international experience."
The squad also sees the return of Rassie van der Dussen, whose omission from the World Cup line-up came as a surprise.
The three matches are scheduled to take place at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba, Trinidad and Tobago, on August 23, 25, and 27.
