The reason behind Gwavu's presence on the field was South Africa's decision to name a 12-member squad for the first match. This was due to the absence of several first-choice players who were involved in the recently concluded SA20 league.

With Heinrich Klaasen and Keshav Maharaj expected to join the South African squad ahead of their clash against Pakistan on Wednesday.

South Africa's full-strength squad is anticipated to assemble in Pakistan over the next week as they prepare for the 2025 Champions Trophy.

A similar incident occurred last year during an ODI between South Africa and Ireland in Abu Dhabi, where the Proteas' batting coach JP Duminy came on as a substitute fielder due to illness among several players.

In the ongoing match, despite a record knock of 150 by debutant Matthew Breetzke, South Africa lost after posting a total of 304, which New Zealand chased down with eight balls to spare, thanks to an unbeaten 133 by Kane Williamson and a 97 by Devon Conway.

With New Zealand defeating Pakistan earlier in the series opener, the game between South Africa and the hosts has become a virtual semi-final ahead of the final on Friday.
