Ranji Trophy: Ton-up Denish leads Assam from front against Chhattisgarh

Assam captain Denish Das, the man of the hour, continued his rich form with the willow by following up his maiden first-class century with a scintillating second ton against the formidable Chhattisgarh bowling attack in Raipur on Wednesday.

The Ranji Trophy Elite Group D match at Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium witnessed a remarkable display of batting prowess and resilience as visitors Assam put up 264 for six wickets from 87 overs at stumps on Day 1.

Asked to bat first, Assam found themselves in a precarious position, losing two early wickets for a mere 22 runs. However, the experienced duo of opener Parvej Musharaf and skipper Das steadied the ship with a gritty 72-run partnership for the third wicket.

Musharaf's patient 42 off 94 deliveries, with seven boundaries, provided the much-needed stability. Das, the captain courageous, took the mantle upon himself and led from the front. His masterful innings of 104 runs off 178 balls, studded with 15 boundaries, showcased his class and temperament. His partnership with wicketkeeper-batter Sumit Ghadigaonkar (54 batting) for the fifth wicket yielded 75 crucial runs, further solidifying Assam's position.

Ghadigaonkar continued his rich vein of form, complementing Das's brilliance with his own composed knock. The unbroken seventh-wicket stand of 44 runs between Ghadigaonkar and Mukhtar Hussain (20 batting) added valuable runs to Assam's formidable total.

While Das's century was the highlight of the day, credit must be given to Chhattisgarh medium pacer Ravi Kiran, who emerged as the pick of the bowlers, claiming three crucial wickets while conceding 48 runs. His disciplined bowling kept the Assam batters on their toes throughout the innings.

As the sun set on the first day's play, Assam found themselves in a commanding position, thanks to the heroics of their captain and the resilience of their batting lineup.
