NEW DELHI: Rishabh Pant will lead India in the second Test against South Africa, starting Saturday at the Barsapara Stadium in Guwahati, after regular captain Shubman Gill was ruled out with a neck injury. Pant steps in for a must-win game as India look to level the two-match series, which South Africa currently lead 1-0 following their memorable victory at Eden Gardens.

The India captain was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of play on Day 2 and was kept under observation before being discharged the next day.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck injury during the first Test against South Africa, has been ruled out of the second Test in Guwahati,” BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said in a statement.
Gill travelled with the team to Guwahati on November 19 but continued to experience discomfort, prompting the medical team to advise rest.
“Unfortunately, he was not fully fit to feature in the 2nd Test and will head to Mumbai for further assessment,” the statement added.
India batting coach Sitanshu Kotak had earlier underlined the risk of rushing Gill back, saying, “We don’t want recurrence of spasm during the game.”
With Gill’s availability for the upcoming ODI series also uncertain, Pant now has the responsibility of leading India in a crucial encounter that could decide the fate of the series.
