NEW DELHI: Former captain Ricky Ponting has thrown his weight behind Marnus Labuschagne, favouring him over Marcus Stoinis in Australia's playing eleven for the World Cup semi-final clash against South Africa. With Glenn Maxwell's return to the side, the decision between Labuschagne and Stoinis becomes pivotal, and Ponting advocates for Labuschagne's inclusion due to his impressive batting skills in the middle overs.

"I probably would (retain Labuschagne)... we've seen Australia have gone to Mitchell Marsh's bowling before they used Stoinis," explained Ponting, referencing Australia's recent match against Bangladesh.

Ponting pinpointed the middle-order batting as an area that needs improvement, especially in the overs 11 to 40, and sees Labuschagne's contribution as valuable in addressing this concern. Stoinis, who has had a subdued campaign with both bat and ball, could make way for the technically equipped Labuschagne.

"If you actually look at the numbers through this series, he (Labuschagne) hasn't done a bad job, second leading run-scorer... and I know the most important phase for Australia through this tournament they haven't got right yet is their middle-order batting," emphasised Ponting.

Shane Watson, former Australia all-rounder, echoed Ponting's sentiments, highlighting Labuschagne's Test skills and his ability to handle a moving ball. Watson stressed the importance of having technically equipped batters during challenging conditions, especially if Australia ends up batting second under lights.

"Labuschagne, with the Test skills, he's got the ability to be able to handle a moving ball. There is a chance that Australia will have to bat second under lights, and he's done a very good job of that throughout this tournament," said Watson.

Australia face South Africa in the World Cup semi-final at Eden Gardens, and the decision between Labuschagne and Stoinis adds an intriguing element to their strategy for this crucial encounter. Ponting and Watson's insights suggest that Labuschagne's batting prowess and ability to handle challenging conditions could be the X-factor Australia need for success.
