Australia took a stranglehold on the Ashes series after beating England by 43 runs in a fiery and controversial second Test in Lord's on Sunday.
With this win, Australia took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
England captain Ben Stokes hit a stunning 155 after Jonny Bairstow was controversially given out stumped after straying out of his ground on the last day.
But England were bowled out for 327 chasing a stiff target of 371.
Australia captain Pat Cummins led the attack with 3-69.
Bairstow, the last of England's specialist batsmen, fell in bizarre fashion for 10 when he wandered out of his ground after ducking a Cameron Green bouncer
A quick-thinking wicketkeeper Alex Carey under-armed the ball onto the stumps.
Bairstow thought he had secured his ground by tapping his bat behind the crease.
The third Test at Headingley starts on Thursday.
The incident took place in the 52nd over of the England chase when Bairstow was given out after Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey threw the ball at the stumps after the England batter walked out of his crease.
The Lord's crowd and social media erupted over the dismissal of Bairstow as it turned out to be one of the decisive factors in the contest.
Despite Stokes' heroic efforts, England's pursuit of the challenging target of 371 came to an end as they were eventually bowled out for 327.
The Australian bowlers proved to be effective in thwarting England's attempts to reach the total, securing a well-deserved victory.
